I had the opportunity to participate and experience a series of workshops entitled “Nurturing Racial Literacy” led by Sharon Davis. As an educator, this workshop was unlike any previous educational or pedagogical techniques I had previously experienced. The concept of racial literacy invites and encourages the participants to recognize and give voice to the feelings and physical reactions they may have to incidents and experiences of racism. The practice and exercise of locating how racism feels and where it is felt has helped me understand not only my reactions to events, but also how other people interpret and express their feelings. As a white woman who routinely interacts with people of color and diverse backgrounds, the experience of nurturing racial literacy has expanded my awareness of the different embodiments and expressions of people who have experienced racism so I can continue to be an advocate and ally for everyone."

I have known Sharon Davis for 8 years. I recently sought out her feedback as an expert educator and learning consultant. What I received from her professional consultation was candid and inspiring. She helped change my perspective in more ways than I expected. Her insites and clarity about racial literacy have re-oriented how I will makes choices going forward. Her impact on my wanting to take action to see my racism as an American citizen and white woman and to take steps to change that are profound.
